Postpartum Depression Treatment

Trained Counselors to Help You Get Back to Feeling Like Yourself

Postpartum Depression Treatment

You know you are supposed to be happier than ever before in your life.  But, you might be asking yourself, “Why aren’t I?”  When postpartum depression happens, it can be unexpected and sometimes it is even scary.  You could be wondering what is wrong with you, or if you will ever feel like yourself again.

Postpartum depression treatment with a trained professional counselor can help.  Even if you aren’t sure if you really need counseling or if you are ready to start, please give us a call and we are happy to talk with you about it.  We want to help any way we can.

Our practitioners use the EPDS (Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale) to better understand how much distress you are feeling.  You can do that too – there is a link below where you can answer the questions yourself right now.

Sometimes postpartum mood changes aren’t exactly like people think.  You might have:

  • Increased anxiety
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Irritability
  • Reluctance to tell anyone how you are feeling
  • Fear of leave your home
  • Crying over the littlest things
  • Worries that your partner will get tired of you feeling this way

It is very common for anxiety to be the most noticeable and bothersome symptom women experience as a part of postpartum distress.

If you are experiencing thoughts or emotions that are concerning you, let your doctor know so that he or she can offer you resources that can help you. You can get in touch with us, or talk with another mental health professional about your concerns.  We are happy to work with you – two of our counselors are trained to help with postpartum issues – or refer you to resources that fit your needs better than we can.

Our counselors can review and discuss the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) with you if you feel this would be helpful.  It can give you an idea of how severe your distress level may be, and if you were to decide to work with that counselor, it gives her a sense of this as well.  Click here to answer the questions and see the EPDS for yourself.

Other Postpartum Issues

Sometimes other issues come up after the baby arrives.  Our counselors are experienced in working with blended families, relationship or intimacy issues, or other postpartum difficulties.  Please give us a call with your concerns. We would be happy to talk with you about it and help you decide on possible solutions.

You might also choose to work with a counselor who is trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) Therapy.  This therapy has recently started to be used in the treatment of postpartum depression with success.  It is best known for its use with treatment of trauma but EMDR is also used to help with other issues such as anxiety, help with weight loss, improve business performance and now postpartum depression as well.  Please let us know if you are interested in this and we are happy to discuss it!
