What is Sand Tray Therapy?
“The hands know how to solve a riddle that the intellect wrestles with in vain.” ~ C.G. Jung.
Sometimes words aren’t enough. Sand tray therapy is one of many forms of therapy that incorporate mind, body and spirit for healing which allow a person to access healing in other ways than talking about it. To do sand tray therapy, you create a “world” in the sand using the sand itself, the tray, and miniatures and objects available in the room.
Many people that ask about this kind of therapy think it is only for children. In fact, most of the LifePaths clients that work with the sand as a part of their therapeutic process are adults and teens. It is a powerful form of therapy that often brings unexpected insights.
There is much more to each of us than what we think or how intellectual we are. Sand tray therapy allows you to let images and symbolism guide you, adding much more than you can get from words alone.
Other things people gain from working with the sand:
- it builds a sense of and confidence in creativity
- it is physically calming/soothing
- relief from usual pressures in life – there is no right or wrong way to do this
- often helps people who feel “stuck” in their talk therapy to jump-start the personal growth they are working on
This type of therapy is effective with many issues that people may be trying to resolve, such as:
- Family issues
- and more
